...school" is a prideful remark that almost all Americans can make in showing off their communities. In thousands of cases, the shape, size and equipment of the new building owe everything to the little-known profession of school consulting. The best-known of the consultants is Nickolaus L. Engelhardt, 58, a nerveless, gruffly warm expert whose firm, the busiest in the nation, has helped 800 school boards mold the down-to-earth terms of education for millions of kids...

...Tsitsin [a distinguished botanist in the Academy of Sciences] said it. He should have been asked at a party meeting why he spoke that way." Lysenko himself was invited to speak. He attacked Alexander Nesmeyanov, president of the Academy of Sciences (TIME Cover, June 2) and V. A. Engelhardt, head of its biology section, in the same truculent language as in the '40s and with the identical arguments that "middleclass" and "foreign reactionary" ideas animated their opposition to his "Marxist" theories...

Then, when the legislature approves, Macon County will disappear...

...Engelhardt and his fellow legislators had overlooked an important point: if the heavy Negro population of Tuskegee and surrounding Macon County provides a political hazard, it also provides the principal economic income of Tuskegee's merchants. In the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church last week, a stomping, whistling crowd of 2,900 Negroes heard Professor Charles G. Gomillion, 57, dean of students at the institute and president of the Tuskegee Civic Association, lay out a strategy for fighting back without violence. "We will buy goods and services only from those who will recognize us as first-class citizens." Then...
