Frustrated Old Howard fans who think they'll save time by substituting "Sweater Girl" for Rose La Rose are going to be sorely disappointed. The only element of "Sweater Girl" that Will Hays could raise even one eyebrow at is the title. Otherwise, Mr. Hays couldn't find enough sex to overcome a mysteriously unmysterious mystery plot, a lot of mugging by June Preisser and Eddie Brucken and a generally corny presentation of a couple of excellent songs...
Walt Disney is in his element only when dealing with rodents. His deer, like his human characters, are flat, two-dimensional color patterns, animated but lifeless. And his cannel but highly emotional thunderstorms are worse still; they are Disney trying to do what the Lord never intended he should; they are Moon Mullins making an ass of himself on the Flash Gordon page...
...synthesis of musical comedy, circus, and burlesque. It begins with a three ring splurge of roller skating and ends up with Willie Howard's artistic interpretation of burlesque's favorite chestnut, the butcher boy skit. Lou Holtz, as a master of ceremonies, supplies, among other things, the only element of continuity to what might have been called "Vaudeville Incorporated." There's also a kick chorus, misnamed "The Versailles Beauties," who lamely present a tedious routine, but they don't appear often enough to do much harm...
...audience confronted by innumerable flashing legs, four undistinguished tunes, and one Victor Mature, has every right to bolt for the exits, but "Footlight Serenade" is worth staying around for. Whether for reasons of budget or of taste the lavish spectacle element has been kept down to a merciful minimum, and though unpretentious, the picture is good...
