...right. Popular music evokes too many sensual associations to be much good as stimulus to meditation, spiritual or otherwise. The situation is aggravated on the recording by the arrangements of Peter Knight, although Mr. Knight has obviously done his best to keep a straight face. The chorus croons Kyrie Eleison over a lulling beguine rhythm, as bongos patter softly and violins execute Viennese glissandos. The whole idea has strong overtones of a collegiate hoax, but Fr. ...sons built an ark (it was carried onstage by an assortment of blue-smocked prop men), Mrs. Noah stood aside and jeered (moaned Noah: "Lord that wemen be crabbed ay!"). The "animals"-a chorus of 70 children-marched two by two into the ark caroling "Kyrie, Kyrie, Kyrie eleison," and the orchestra launched with a crash into cymbal-punctuated storm music that reached its climax in a beautifully descanted chorus of Eternal Father. Last week, after rehearsing since September, Bethlehem's choir gave it its 42nd festival performance. With the first full-throated assault of the opening "Kyrie eleison" the choir had its audience-1,100 packed in the church, another thousand on the sunlit lawns outside-thrilling to attention...

Last week, before the 1,000-year-old wooden throne of the patriarch in Istanbul's small cathedral of Phanari, silver icons and ancient mosaics gleamed under the huge crystal chandeliers, and incense rose in clouds. Chanting the Kyrie Eleison, the twelve bearded metropolitans and their five alternates solemnly filed in and dropped their ballots into a silver urn. When the votes were counted, eleven were for Athenagoras and six were blank. "Axios!" (worthy) roared the crowd, and the cathedral bells began to peal...
