Today, when the question of who is a professional is of so much interest in connection with the clauses to that effect in the resolutions on athletics, it may be of as much value to learn what an amateur is according to the strict ruling. For by the ordinary custom it is acknowledged that a man who ceases to be an amateur becomes at once a professional. There is no halfway position.
