Another informational video advertised further innovation driven by this same use of technology for mobilizing political fervor. One tech company, under the Institute for Applied Autonomy, developed text messaging software designed to send mass text messages to many people at once. The concept is that demonstrators can more quickly organize in an urban setting if they are in contact via text message...

...those classes, I encountered an incredibly driven pre-med population. They worked exceedingly hard in class, often forming study groups on Friday and Saturday nights. I was impressed by their diligence, but I was also continually frustrated by their unabated emphasis on grades. They memorized lectures and regurgitated textbooks in hopes of an extra two points on an exam, but I found that few of them were ever truly excited about the material they toiled over. And slowly, disturbingly, I found that my own interest in molecular biology was waning...

Unlike with other concentrations, a WGS concentrator must constantly defend the legitimacy of his or her studies. The ubiquitous misconception on campus is that WGS is “a polemical discipline, that it is politically driven in a way that other disciplines aren’t,” said Jennifer C. Nash ’01, who graduated with a Women’s Studies degree and served as a teaching fellow for the Committee from 2003 to 2004. Many administrators also don’t recognize that WGS is promoting scholarship and debate rather than a particular...
