Sometimes, though not as much lately, I stop my staring and try to sleep. But then, of course, I dream about staring and after I wake, I must begin staring, again...
First of all, this may demonstrate, in a way Joel Klein could only dream about, the danger of monopoly. The networks are now for the most part relying on a single source for their exit polling information - the Voter News Service. The VNS quizzes people exiting polling stations in thousands of (hopefully) representative precincts nationwide, asking them a series of demographic and attitudinal questions that in theory give us a complete snapshot of the Mind of the American Voter. The service is blisteringly fast, churning out state and national results in three waves as the voting day progresses...
...Cable TV news: Splitsville! This is the dream of every American who loves nonstop media circuses and nightmare scenarios straight out of an airport paperback: A plurality of the people vote for one candidate (most likely Bush) while the electoral college makes the other (presumably Gore) president. Would it mean a constitutional crisis? Full-scale lobbying of electors to change their votes? Maybe and maybe - but it would definitely mean some measure of suspense and controversy until the electors actually vote. Better yet, it would mean four years of bitter recriminations of a president, whoever it ends up being, viewed...
...still, he did play baseball like a dream, didn't he? And gosh, the handsome suits, the silver hair, the sculpted features! Of course, why we ever thought that those attributes had anything to do with character says more about us than it does about...
