East of Java (Universal). An ex-gangster named Red Bowers (Charles Bickford) becomes a leader of men when cast ashore on an island off East Africa together with the crew, passengers and cargo, mostly lions, of the tramp steamer Sea Dragon. East of Java was adapted from Gouverneur Morris' Tiger Island by able Screenwriter James Creelman, and regardless of its minor sins against credulity it has a reckless tempo and a tendency for killing off its cast, unusual and charming as a contrast to the current prissy mode of photographing people who sit around on sofas talking imitation Philip...
...scenery was shoddy, the orchestra ragged. For its first home-grown Ring, the San Francisco Opera is spending $80,000, importing such peerless Wagnerians as Soprano Kirsten Flagstad, Tenor Lauritz Melchior, Baritone Friedrich Schorr. Some $40,000 has been invested in scenery alone. There is a horrible, life-like dragon and a special new cloud machine which projects photographs of actual clouds on the backdrop...
When Camilo Aldao announced the production of a play starring Cardini, the famed magician, there was considerable apprehension in "the circles" as to just what sort of drama could be erected about his suave but untested histrionics. Already--oh clever one! --he has cut a piece from her priceless veil. Already--with his wand--he has awakened her from her magic sleep; already seated her on her golden throne. And things thus far are going well. Already he has approached her with these sweet words: "My fairest princess, dost thou...
That Japan's blood brotherhoods still flourish disturbingly appeared last week when the notorious Black Dragon Society announced Tokyo festivities in honor of a representative recently dispatched to Japan by Ethiopia's hard pressed Emperor. This representative, potent Daba Birrou, accompanied the Duke of Gloucester on H. R. H.'s sporting tour in Ethiopia (TIME, Nov. 10, 1930). He ranks among the Emperor's closest friends, though he reached Japan entitled merely "Secretary to the Honorary Japanese Consul for Ethiopia in Osaka, Mr. Chuzaburo Yukawa...
