...pitted, 40-foot slope to a lower plain, the scout cars had to stop. But the horses did not. Over the brow of the slope, down the sandy ridge they leaped and slid. All along the ridge poured a river of men & horses, breaking at the edge, spilling downward and riding on. Half a mile beyond, they clustered again. Riflemen dismounted, jerked guns from holsters. Machine-gunners ripped at their packs, vanished into the brush with the guns. Within five minutes the squadron was deployed for battle, the horses had disappeared among the sand hills...
...anyone who is familiar with firearms and their handling may readily discern, the following items are incorrect: 1) twisted posture, from jutting neck to probable poor foot position; 2) thumb is bent downward, grasping the pistol butt instead of being straight alongside the receiver - and acting as a brace; 3) wrist is not straight; 4) entire arm is crooked, which will cause the recoil to be directed off his body at an angle; 5) left arm is tensely drawn across his body, instead of being in one of the three approved positions - at side, bent with palm flat...
...electron microscope leads scientists a long way downward into the realm of the infinitesimally small. Using magnetically focused electron beams instead of light beams, it discloses details (of germs, chemicals, etc.) 20 or more times finer than can be seen with optical microscopes (TIME, Oct. 28). Records of height and weight for 65,000 university freshmen were either trending downward, or wobbling. At three universities the freshman girls have been reporting later and later first menstruations-a phenomenon which Dr. Mills associates with short stature and warm climate. In short, if world weather keeps warmer, Dr. Mills expects a shorter, sicker, slower population...
Surgical correction of bosom sag involves lifting the breast, reattaching it firmly to the pectoral muscle by means of absorbable sutures, transplanting the nipple and areola (pigmented circle) to their esthetically proper site on the new formation. The incision leaves an inconspicuous scar, and since it is made downward from the new nipple site, the breasts are completely unmarked above the nipples. If the breast is "hypertrophic" (over-developed), superfluous tissue is removed in a wedge-shaped segment. If it is "atrophic" (under-developed), an uplifting and reshaping job alone often restores a satisfactory contour; if not, fatty tissue lifted...
