...role was doubtless played by rumors that created an explosive trading environment, like a roomful of ether waiting for a spark. One story, quickly squelched, was that Ronald Reagan had suffered a heart attack. Most of the other rumors involved speculation about renewed inflation and higher interest rates, the traditional enemies of stocks. At one point, word spread that two governors of the Federal Reserve believed interest rates, on a long two-year slide, had bottomed out. One broker was so confident of the information, which turned out to be false, that he told a client to call back...

These lines from America the Beautiful were doubtless sung at many a Protestant service over the July 4 weekend, along with the verses of another warhorse, the Battle Hymn of the Republic ("Mine eyes have seen the glory . . ."). But at least one group of church officials has deemed these traditional words unfit for use in worship. Earlier this year a committee preparing a new hymnal for the United Methodist Church voted to delete the lines from the volume. Still more horse trading can be expected later in House-Senate conference. Some of the far more generous transition rules kneaded into the House version of the bill will doubtless be bartered away, but others are sure to be affirmed in order to keep the support of influential Representatives for a sweeping overhaul of the tax code. Some of the deliberate obfuscation may clear up, however; the Senate last week piously passed a nonbinding resolution asking that the conference committee report the reason for each transition rule adopted, exactly who will profit and by how much--information that is still...

...heterosexual or things my 19th century upbringing forbids me to name. In fact, few individuals seeking redress or public attention claim the advantage of numbers on their behalf. On the contrary: they petition from weakness as the surest method of attaining their goals. The proliferation of vociferous minorities has doubtless resulted in the righting of many wrongs. It has also led to a noticeable decline in the civility of public discourse. The United States has become at once more equitable, and clamorous, than before...

...irrelevant and near to tasteless. She is played by Lillian Gish, and the movies' oldest pro clearly understands that she is trapped in Sweet Liberty's dreariest neighborhood. She does her brash best to break loose, but her efforts are more brave than successful. Doubtless her first auteur, D.W. Griffith, warned her there would be roles like this. And movies like this, signaling good intentions at every turn, but never quite achieving them...
