...young smokers was "no accident." Also no accident, the presidential timing. The FDA had a slew of stricter rules on the sale and marketing of tobacco products ready last year, but as the President prepares for the Democratic National Convention, his Rose Garden assault on the tobacco industry will doubtless play favorably in the polls. The new FDA rules are intended to cut the number of teen smokers by 50 percent within seven years. Photo ID will be required to buy cigarettes, while vending machines will be eliminated in all but adults-only spots where minors cannot venture. Advertisements...

...observation widely acknowledged that a billionaire knows the price of everything but not always its value. The judicious reader will doubtless recall from Volume I Mr. Ross Perot's 1992 pursuit of the nation's highest office, when he precipitately and mystifyingly withdrew, before once again re-entering in October and garnering 19% of the vote. Volume II begins as our protagonist, after spending months of coy obfuscation and many millions creating his perhaps inaptly named Reform Party, declares his intentions forthrightly to his amiable megaphone, Mr. Larry King, but not before luring one hapless Coloradan by the name...

...room apartment in Kensington Palace rent free. That may not be the Windsors' preference or Diana's. In recent years she has been offered a look around other grand London houses, but the excellent security at Kensington Palace, a dormitory for various royals, including Princess Margaret, was doubtless the deciding factor. The concern would not have been just for Diana's well-being but also for the children's. There has never been any squabbling over custody, and the boys will continue to split their time between their parents...

...choreographer is Savion Glover, already a seasoned Broadway performer at 22. He made his debut at 12 in Tap Dance Kid, and has since starred in Black and Blue and Jelly's Last Jam. Even granting this list of precocious credits, Glover's style is surprisingly mature. He will doubtless go through life being compared to Fred Astaire, but the link is authentic, not so much stylistically--Glover pounds his feet down, Astaire seemed poised for flight--as in the unique quality of each man's work. Just as it would be impossible to mistake the bumptious Gene Kelly...

...Holocaust could conceivably be overstated!) I couldn't help marvelling at some of the expressionless faces of the passersby that walked on, unmoved by the nameless faces peering out at their from behind the electrified barbed wire. There was tremendous irony in the quote on one poster which doubtless many did not even stop to read: "Six million were wiped off the face of the earth. And there is the danger that they will also be annihilated from our memories. Are they doomed to a two-fold annihilation?" Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel's haunting question remains unanswered. Only time will...
