...author who in 71 years has published only 27 stories and one novel can scarcely be considered a major writer; and that little old white-haired lady is one of the grimmer misanthropes of 20th century literature. Clearly, Author Porter requires reappraisal, and that reappraisal will doubtless be provoked by the publication of this volume: the first complete collection of her long and short stories-among them four never published before...
...Parliament and our own budget." A delegation of Corsican officials, recently returned from a ten-day tour of autonomous Sicily and Sardinia (which still retain ties with Italy), felt the same. "Autonomy is the essential ingredient," said one. "This is not just evolution, but revolution," said another. Paris doubtless was recalling the words of Corsica's favorite son. Regarding Corsican separatism, Napoleon himself took a realistic view: "All these notions of national independence for a little island like Corsica!" exclaimed Bonaparte to his brother Lucien in 1802. "What difference does it make in the universal balance...
...Eight troop-carrying choppers were hit by ground fire, but resistance was light as the operation began; by nightfall of the first day, the 1st Cavalrymen were hot on the heels of a 500-man Viet Cong force, and many more of the enemy doubtless awaited in the nearby countryside. For weeks U.S. planes have bombed the Viet Cong concentrations, guns from the Seventh Fleet have pounded the coast east of Route 1, and government troops punched away-with casualties...
Leary is a surprisingly staid fellow and doubtless disappointed many in his hip audience last Thursday night at PBH. His one concession to that sensibility was an outrageous amoeboid tie, but his tweediness in other respects would have endeared him to any Clubbie, had there been one in attendance. Close-up, Leary looks a little punchy, especially his eyes and nose, but there is certainly no indication of it when he speaks. Inclined to diffidence until he senses some empathy on the part of his questioner, Leary seized the first opportunity to let me know that our "interviewer-victim relationship...
This is a tough contest to figure, and one which Harvard fans will doubtless be watching with keen interest. Dartmouth's defense is a question mark, and their 56-6 win over puny New Hampshire last week means nothing. The Holy Cross pass defense, untested against Harvard, may be week, and Holy Cross will see plenty of aerials from the Indians' Mickey Beard...
