...Yard has traditionally been reserved for freshmen (although last year there were some sophomores living there and this year an entire dorm, Canaday, will be filled with upperclassmen), while freshmen at the Quad live in houses which are made up of students at every level. The Yard tends to be rowdier than the Quadrangle--everyone who lived recently in the Yard remembers all night shouting matches between Thayer and Holworthy ("Thayer Sucks!"), and has heard of the legendary Straus Rape and Pillage Society which paraded around the Yard last year on Thursday nights complete with drums and occasional bagpipes...

The proctor is supposed to perform services for mature young adults. He or she may bake cookies for the dorm every week. And buy beer for the dorm every couple of nights. A freshwoman who lived in a mixed entry conceded that her proctor had been a nice guy, but a complete loser when it came to dealing with eighteen-year-old women. "He was very popular with the guys in the dorm--mainly, I think, because they were flattered to drink beer and play touch football with a 28-year-old grad student. All he could manage to say to us women were things like, 'How's your boyfriend?" I didn't have...

Green was initially hired by the Office Student Employment for one week of work on the dorm crew--At the end of that week the supervisors of Buildings and Grounds--in this case Pritchard--decide which students are hired for additional work. At Harvard College and Radcliffe Buildings and Grounds, the decision is made by letters...
