John Dwyer, a brawny hiring boss on the brawling New York City dock? (and a prototype of Marlon Brando's movie role in On the Waterfront), quit his $10,000-a-year job last year to fight the racket-ridden International Longshoremen's Association. As vice president of the A.F.L.'s new rival dock union, he won thousands of dock-wallopers away from the I.L.A. But last month the I.L.A. won a Labor Relations Board election (by a scant 263 votes out of 18,551), and thereby held on to control of waterfront jobs...

...night of freedom on a U.S. landing craft moored in the Red River. He stripped off his drab prison clothes, threw them into the water, donned a fresh uniform with the jaunty red cap of the Moroccan spahis. Next day he sailed to Hanoi and was greeted on the dock by General René Cogny, wartime commander in the northern theater, who is still in command pending the Communist takeover. As he embraced Cogny, De Castries burst into tears. "Excuse me," he said. "It's foolish, but I cannot control my emotion." Then Cogny, also visibly moved, whisked...

...band of anxious engineers clambered onto a floating dock in San-Diego Bay recently to watch the newest U.S. Navy flying boat, out for its first water trial; as a photographer snapped away, the plane's bow gaped open like the mouth of a giant whale, revealing an enormous cavern for cargo. The So-ton craft, pictures of which were released last week, was the R3Y-2 "Flying LST," built for beach-assault operations by General Dynamics' Convair division. To pull away from a beach or dock the pilot, simply reverses propellers; the ship needs...

While other shippers shied away from Government cargoes (rates about half commercial rates), Tom Cuffe grabbed them. He knew a shipper could pick up a full Government cargo at one dock, thus cut down on the money-losing time a ship spends in port picking up a few crates here and there. Cuffe also hired go-getting Sales Manager Al Papworth to bring in private cargoes. He did so by finding buyers and sellers for goods Pacific could carry. Examples: a Philippine glassmaker who was having trouble finding the right kind of sand was persuaded to import it from...
