...dias, announces his continuing to MacBird's ideals. MacBird is constitutionally immune to Negroes, Bobby to idealism; all show a ruthlessness and vulgarity that calls up all sorts of traditional cliches about politicians. MacBird's perspective on foreign policy is no more imaginative. The Pox Americana threatens to descend on all the world's wayward nations ("Our force shall only force them to be free"), while a mounting crisis in Vietland underscores the play's domestic spectacle. And the New Left (personified in the three witches, a New Negro, and old Wobbly and an audacious little coed) is damned along...

Western experts are reasonably sure that Soyuz 1, designed to re-enter the atmosphere and descend at a controlled attitude, had only one surface protected by a heat shield against the high temperatures of reentry. If Soyuz was indeed tumbling upon reentry, as many U.S. experts believe, its unshielded surfaces would also have been exposed to the direct frictional effects of the atmosphere. As these surfaces began to burn up, temperatures in the spacecraft cabin would quickly have reached fatal levels...

...Some pot peddlers even pass out supermarket-style trading stamps with each purchase. Apart from narcotics arrests, however, the crime rate shows no drastic escalation. During a January "Human Be-In" at Golden Gate Park, 10,000 hippies turned out to sing folk-rock songs, watch a psychedelic parachutist descend from a "high trip," and listen to Hindu prayers by Sometime Guru Allen Ginsberg, who has survived the transition from beat to hip. Even members of Hell's Angels, the roughknuckled, leather-jacketed motorcyclists in Nazi drag, turned up to turn on: some were seen holding lost children...

...number of bizarre ways. In the explosion of an errant rocket in the view of millions on TV; in the instant incineration of a capsule out of control during the treacherous reentry into the earth's heavy atmosphere; in the coffin of a malfunctioning craft unable to descend that orbits, orbits, orbits in the spatial void while power ebbs and life leaks away in slow suffocation...
