...Revenge motivated the leaders of the U.S.-based MS, whose initials stand for "Salvatrucha Gang," to order Cortes killed. They blamed him for his failure, while leading the gang inside the penitentiary, to defend his members against an attack by rivals from the 18th Street gang. It had been the worst prison massacre in Honduran history: While the MS slept on the floor of their cramped dormitory, members of the "18" had sneaked in with homemade knives and steel pipes and killed 11 of Cortes's homeboys. The attackers then gutted their victims and triumphantly strung their intestines along...
...just discuss the safe issues. We must be willing to confront the difficult ones. Say that Ariel Sharon's visit to the Temple Mount is directly responsible for the recent outbreak of violence. Say that Israel has the right to use all powers at its disposal to defend its soldiers and citizens against mob violence. Say you support a Palestinian state. And Arafat responded that the raids could not "shake one eyelash from the eyelashes of a Palestinian child holding a Palestinian stone to defend holy Jerusalem." And as if the image of Israeli air raids and Palestinians urging children into battle wasn't sufficient evidence that the peace process isn't going anywhere soon, the killing of an Israeli security guard at a government building in East Jerusalem and the discovery of the body...
...second argument is Israel's right to "self-defense." Of course Israel has the right to exist and defend itself. But defend against what? Nearly all of the so-called "violence in Israel" has actually taken place in the Palestinian Occupied Territories, not in Israel. Israel is thankfully not in danger of being wiped out any time soon. Anyone who thinks that rock-throwing protesters in the Occupied Territories threaten Israel's existence has a very low opinion of the Israeli army's capabilities...
