...massed the basses in the centre, and stationed the tenors on the wings, the leader gave the signal for readiness. In the meantime the 'cellos had performed a beautiful fantasia, which elicited great enthusiasm from the lookers-on, but gradually subsided to a low wail, as if preparatory to defeat. The signal was given; the instruments lead off on the "Marseillaise," while from the other end of the field thundered the chorus of "Yankee Doodle." A terrific crash followed, as the opposing ranks met in the struggle; screams of grief, shouts of triumph, filled the air, while the strains...
...failure of the freshmen Saturday to defeat Andover should not lead to discouragement on their part, nor induce them to despair of victory over Yale. Yale's eleven, it should be remembered, has always the advantages of several weeks more of practice than our own, and consequently more is to be expected of them at this early date. Two weeks of assiduous practice may work an entire change in the prospects of our team. Only persistent and constant effort is necessary. The honor of victory would be sufficiently high to repay all the pains the eleven may take...
...short time since a ball nine from Cornell University played a game with the Hobart freshman nine, in which the former nine were ingloriously vanquished. It was subsequently discovered by the Cornellites that the Hobart men had engaged some outside talent, and to this the Cornell nine attributed their defeat. Trouble ensued, the Cornellites claiming that they were not honestly beaten, and charging the Hobart nine with unfairness, and the latter asserting that it was not an unusual thing to engage ball-players not connected with the college. The Hobart faculty interfered and sided with the Cornell nine. They advised...
...good work, while Harvard's strength lay in good tackling by the rush line and kicking by the quarter-back. Several very pretty runs were made by the half-backs, especially in the first half of the game, when Amherst's hard and quick tackling saved her from worse defeat. On the whole the match gave very good practice to our eleven, as the Amherst team was always on the lookout to gain every possible advantage. But the 'Varsity must play a steadier game and show more spirit in their rushing and tackling. The half-backs in particular must play...
...great pity that the crew dinner should prove a fiasco, especially after their hard-won race last June. If it were ever becoming to banquet a crew, it would certainly be this one, who labored perseveringly in the face of defeat prophesied on all hands and were finally victorious over rivals whose method was considered easy victory or ruination, and which proved neither one nor the other. The subscribers for the dinner have come forward in ridiculously small numbers, either through forgetfulness of the near approach of the date assigned or for some less charitable reason. Let us hope...
