Party venues don't come much more memorable than this. On Feb. 28, the sleepy Australian outback town of Alice Springs, usually known for its ecological attractions and bush walks, plays host to Alice Is Wonderland-a riotous, daylong extravaganza catering to divas, drag queens and those with a simple yearning to dance in the desert. Alice Springs (pop. 25,000) would appear to be an unlikely setting, but it apparently boasts a higher percentage of lesbian residents than any other town in the country...

Originally created for children who have lost loved ones, Comfort Zone rallied to set up satellites in New York and New Jersey just after Sept. 11. The first session was virtually next door to the northern New Jersey...
...more unexpected way to beat the heat is to hike in the spectacular Tahquitz Canyon, which was recently opened to the public for the first time in more than 30 years. Its terrain is striped with cooling waterfalls, and the many rock overhangs along its granite face provide often daylong shade. Or take the tram up Mount San Jacinto, where the air is usually brisk. And, of course, that apres-hike martini is always cool. --By Lisa McLaughlin
