...last hour before another chilly Siberian dawn has arrived, and the Soviet sentries on the snow-covered Ussuri River island of Damansky are nodding slightly. Suddenly, with a blare of bugles and raucous shouts of "Mao Tse-tung!" white-cloaked Chinese Communist troops hurl themselves across the ice toward the Russian positions. Mortars and heavy artillery pour flaming metal onto the defenders. The Russians fight back bravely, but they are quickly overwhelmed. Within an hour, the Chinese occupy the island they call Chen...

...down ice glare and prevent chapping, grabs a 60-lb. pup by a hind flipper, whacks it on its soft skull, spins the pup over, punctures the throat and then neatly skins away pelt, flippers and blubber with swift strokes of a razor-sharp knife. The process commences at dawn, continues until dark and turns the once pristine ice into an ugly palette of dirtied snow, crimson blood sprays and grotesquely skinned carcasses. The film's ambiguous ending, which puts a parenthesis of fantasy around the action, may at first seem facile. On reflection, however, the viewer finds that a whole...

Venice rotted and went stormy with the end of summer. The last days were bittersweet like the cigarette of a man about to die. Champagne at dawn and sleep through the day. The most proper Englishman of all, burdened by a suspicion of having danced nude at breakfast, did not show himself again. Not many of us said good-bye. There was too much "see you around" in that...
