While Pavement's last LP, Slanted and Enchanted, did not make them a household name, or even crack the top 40 for that matter, it was a pretty seminal event in the indie rock world. I personally think it's the best LP released to date this decade, and I probably listened to it three or four times a day for seven months after it came out. You want to get a hold of that record if you like bands like The Velvet Underground. I'm not the only person who felt this way, however: it sold many thousands...
Indeed, just five years after the fateful date passed, the Berlin wall was down and the Soviet Union had collapsed. Gone were the Staasi, the KGB and the secret police forces of every other fallen communist regime, which in their heyday terrorized ordinary civilians with the knowledge that their words and actions were being watched. Across the East Bloc and around the world, people breathed easier at the spread of freedom and the demise of Big Brother...
Since then, I've added one more criterion to my list of desirable attributes in the men I date: it helps if they have seen "The Philadelphia Story," preferably more than once, and loved it. It's not that easy to find these days, but when I do, I know things could get serious...
...sort of. For example: when Peter Jefferies and Graeme Jefferies, two brooding, musical brother who had been in the same band for four years (and whose relationship was therefore at the proverbial Breaking Point) recorded In the Same Room in 1984, the album amounted to their best work to date, and maybe, in 1994, remains their best. Peter's edgy, drone-oriented piano playing, his worried, half-secretive delivery of sometimes profound lyrics, dominated about half the songs; the others swooned under the heroic weight of Graeme's archer, slower (and even lower) voice, and against his haunting acoustic guitar...
