...company has met with mixed results since its splashy launch. It has performed strongly in film, but most of its hits (including Impact and Private Ryan) have been joint ventures with other studios, which came up with the scripts. In television, DreamWorks has had some expensive failures (Ted Danson's Ink, for example) and only one solid hit: Spin City. In music, it has yet to strike gold. George Michael's DreamWorks debut was a disappointment. Newer acts on the label, such as Eels, Rufus Wainwright and Elliott Smith, have received strong reviews and, so far, have been non-starters...

...second act of the play, the set is turned into the set of a talk show: the audience in the theater becomes the studio audience. The host is Delfina Treadwell (Randy Danson), an unholy combination of Ricki Lake and Oprah Winfrey intent on getting at her guest's deepest, darkest secrets. Her guests on this occasion are Michael and Livia Majeski. "What are you hiding in your heart?" she asks Michael. A series of revelations ensue when she doesn't believe Michael's story, necessitating a major reinterpretation of what has transpired...

Paton brings a wonderfully deadpan delivery to the character of Michael Majeski, sounding strangely like a sedated Garrison Keillor, while Hall is wonderfully neurotic as Livia. Danson and Derrah, as Delfina Treadwell and her assistant are guilty pleasures--the most cartoonishly satirical elements in the story...

...disagree with their politics, but you have to admire their pluck. Last week four actors with combative reputations lent their thuggish personalities to the bully pulpit. Expressing his antipathy to impeachment, JACK NICHOLSON appeared at a Los Angeles rally with Barbra Streisand and Ted Danson, while ROBERT DENIRO lobbied Republican Congressmen Jim Ramstad of Minnesota and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina on behalf of the President. Meanwhile, in a Los Angeles courtroom, the voluminous MARLON BRANDO joined the volatile SEAN PENN to protest prosecutors' efforts to send former Black Panther Geronimo Pratt back to jail. Pratt was released last year...

...original language. Although not as eloquent and lyrical as typical 17th century verse, the clear and unbroken dialogue provides for effortless comprehension on the part of an American audience. As for individual performances, each cast member skillfully plays out his or her part in Phaedra's psychological battlefield: Randy Danson, in the title role, effectively relays the wrenching inner turmoil of her character, while Benjamin Evett instills Hypolytus with a sense of naivete and youthful nerve. Theseus--Jonathan Epstein--delivers a charged performance as well, with his towering stature and the gruff voice of an Athenian warrior. The production appears...
