...most influential movie critic in America, back from an extended cinematic tour in Europe, lost no time in firing a bombshell whose repercussions will be felt for some time. The critic in question is, of course, the New York Times' Bosley Crowther; and the blast was his August 7 column, "Subtitles Must Go!" In it he came out strongly in favor of dubbed English dialogue in foreign language films...
...than Crowther maintains. And for those who cannot, subtitles provide the sense without depriving anyone of the vital, special sound of the original. This way, everyone in the audience is served; with dubbing, a large portion of the audience is cheated. Crowther also dismisses completely, as the eminent novelist-critic-essayist Carl Van Vechten remarked in his letter, the sizable number of deaf people, for whom subtitled movies constitute almost the only satisfactory theatrical experience. In addition the preservation of the original sound acts as a check against the insidious kind of distortion and censorship that characterized the dubbed versions...
Somewhere or other Shaw tells of a momentous discovery he once made: from the balcony of a theater of any considerable size actors appear rather like puppets, gesturing about on the stage with blurs for faces. "That's easy to say if you are not involved," said Sahl, fingering the trigger. "But if you are in the Administration, you have a lot of problems of policy, like whether or not to use an overlapping...
...forms which abstract painters later took up. At the current Venice Biennale, 81 of his works are being exhibited in posthumous tribute. Such richly toned collages as Painting with Stars are formed with striking and harmonious patterns composed with discipline and almost geometric precision. "His collages," wrote Critic Diego Valeri, "are little miracles-tasteful, sensitive, communicative, and even touching. To the unwary eye, they may seem mere exercises in patience. But to the discriminating onlooker, they turn out to be small but exquisite works...
