From California to Maine, dam removal has begun. When four small diversion dams were taken off a Sierra Nevada stream called Butte Creek, record numbers of spring-run Chinook salmon--listed by the U.S. as a threatened species--rushed past their ruins to spawn. If the spring-run Chinook ends up on the more serious endangered-species list, that will trigger more restrictions on diversions from its spawning rivers. So helping the spring-run by getting rid of a few dams could be worth billions to California's economy, which is hopelessly dependent on the manipulation of water...

...always exciting for a biologist to find an animal species for the first time, but the 1974 discovery made by Michael Tyler of the University of Adelaide was even more fascinating than usual. Searching a boulder-strewn, fast-flowing creek in an Australian rain forest, Tyler spotted a frog unlike any he'd ever encountered. My older brother and I were feral, free-range children, independent at ages eight and ten in a way that seems strange or impossible now. We engaged from time to time in juvenile gang warfare. We had vicious rock fights with boys from another...

...Skulls, a recently released teeny-bopper thriller starring "Dawson's Creek" heart-throb Joshua Jackson, is supposedly based on the real Ivy League experiences of both the movie's director, Rob Cohen, and writer-producer, John Pogue. The movie delves into the world of elite "secret societies" at a generic Ivy League institution called Y University (although the shots of the unmistakably dingy streets of New Haven make the connection relatively simple, not to mention the school's blue and white colors and bulldog mascot...
