Some orthodox psychiatrists have performed thousands of lobotomies, in which a knife is slashed through the cortex, the most essentially human part of the brain. Some do not hesitate to give patients scores or even hundreds of electric or insulin-shock treatments, or to put them in an insulin coma. Alongside these procedures, the red-brick school points out, the use of chlorpromazine and reserpine is gentle. It can make the patient readily accessible if the overworked psychiatrist has a few minutes to practice psychotherapy on him. If psychotherapy can prove its worth even in psychoses, these drugs give...
With as many as 40 leads into the brain of a single monkey, Dr. Delgado has found that by passing a current through different parts of the cortex, he can stimulate a resting monkey to raise his paws, scratch himself, turn around, yawn, or start trying to catch imaginary insects. In some monkeys he stimulated the lateral hypothalamus for an hour a day, and the animals ate up to ten times as much as usual. A few days after stimulation is stopped, the monkeys' appetites go back to normal. The seat of a monkey's love for bananas...
...vampire, Renold was one of a team which was testing the oarsmen's reactions to stress. Dr. George W. Thorn (TIME, May 21) acted on the theory that in a normal, healthy reaction to physical or emotional stress the adrenal cortex is stimulated. It then puts out more hormones, which (among other effects) cut down the number of eosinophils (a type of white cell) circulating in the blood. Thus a series of before & after eosinophil counts might show whether a man's reaction to stress is normal...
...Thorn thesis, all the Harvard-men showed a "healthy" response to stress; eosinophil counts showed a drop proportionate to exhaustion. If an exhausted man's count had failed to show a drop of 50% or more, Thorn would have regarded it as a sign that the adrenal cortex was not producing the extra hormones which the body demands under stress...
...used. ACTH is one of at least six important hormones secreted by the pituitary, each of which acts as a master control regulating the flow of a series of other vital substances in the body. ACTH got its full name from the group it controls: the hormones of the cortex (outer casing) of the adrenals (the glands which bestride the kidneys). No less than 28 such slave hormones, including cortisone (see below), have been found in the adrenals. When their flow is stimulated, there may be harmful side effects...
