...Ariel Sharon visited the disputed holy site in old Jerusalem, escalated with the gut-wrenching televised death of a 12-year-old Palestinian boy shot as his father tried to shelter him, and then erupted when seething Palestinians (whom Yasser Arafat seemed at first unwilling and then unable to control) murdered and mutilated two Israeli soldiers. Prime Minister Ehud Barak ordered a military retaliation, which halted his lonely reach, or perhaps overreach, for a comprehensive peace...

...Israel developed new equipment, new forces and new tactics. To secure its borders, Israel deployed more heavily armored tanks and troop-carrying vehicles. Apache helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles and very long-range optics were procured. To protect itself internally, Israel issued its infantrymen plastic bullets and other riot-control gear. Special security forces were organized to help relieve the conventional Israeli units of responsibility for keeping order inside Israel. When confrontation with hostile crowds was unavoidable, Israel used restrictive rules of engagement--and snipers to respond to armed opponents--in an effort to minimize losses and avoid dramatic scenes that...

I know our local shopping malls, fast-food spots and the like all have security guards around the clock. Even our little local grocery store has a sheriff moonlighting as a guard on weekend nights. Maybe the major airlines that transport millions of people each year should consider hiring people to protect those of us who use their services. JENNIFER BAILEY O'NEIL Cincinnati, Ohio
