...office, scanning each meticulously to ferret out tiny differences. When Souter went to Washington to present his case, he went alone and without notes. His argument -- that since a boat could not get to the ocean from the lake, it was not a navigable waterway subject to federal control -- was so cogent and airtight that the Coast Guard withdrew its claim. This case added to the legal lore in the state that no one who is party to a case ever knows more about it than Souter. Says Merrill: "You can always count on David to have read relevant cases...

...rapid expansion of a once sleepy, snobbish concern into a global retailing empire is a triumph for Dumas, 52, one of 17 cousins who control 87% of the firm. A silver-tongued swashbuckler who spent a year as an assistant buyer for Bloomingdale's in Manhattan, Dumas has boosted Hermes annual sales ninefold, to $460 million, since he took over in 1978. ...swiftness with which Souter was named -- less than 72 hours after Brennan's resignation -- was almost as surprising as the nominee himself. "The President saw immediately that he needed to move quickly," says a senior White House official. "Otherwise, the interest groups were going to take control of the debate, narrow his options and make confirmation more difficult." Bush was on Air Force One, preparing to head back to Washington after a few days of politics and fishing out west, when he got the news that Brennan was stepping down. After calling Brennan to accept his resignation, Bush...

...bound mafia figure, just offbeat enough to make very believable the idea of a man involved in importing endangered species. Unfortunately, this ridiculous plot should not be the heart of the film. Like all of Bergman's scripts, The Freshman is about a man trapped in circumstances beyond his control, a role filled here by Broderick's character. By right, the film's focus should be on Broderick, but Brando usurps that focus. The action sequences involving Broderick as a result appear banal and contrived in comparison to watching the sheer genius of Brando's acting unfold onscreen...
