...credit is hugely popular in Silicon Valley and among biotechnology and large pharmaceuticals companies. R. and D. is their lifeblood. Such companies depend on a constant flow of new drugs and gadgets. But is it right that they slough off onto taxpayers part of their R.-and-D. tab? It seems a difficult argument to support, given how much money is to be made once a new drug or technology reaches the marketplace...

...Coen Brothers' upcoming film, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" is one of these musicals in disguise. The characters - even the one played by George Clooney - break out into folk, country and bluegrass standards like "Man of Constant Sorrow" that are strung throughout the movie. Set in Depression-era Mississippi, the movie even has a scene which features marching Klansmen and a singing Klan leader. Actually, I could have done without that sequence. The only thing creepier than a singing Klan leader is... well, let me get back to you on that after I see the re-released, uncut version...

...Schulman's revival of this classic musical was widely praised in the mainstream press. USA Today, Time Magazine, and Newsweek positively bubbled over with appreciation for 'a good, old-fashioned crowd-pleaser.' In fact, the production has many things working in its favor. Although he seems engaged in a constant struggle not to mimic Robert Preston's performance in the original production and the film, Craig Bierko is a reasonably charismatic leading man.
