Professor Goodwin was born at Concord, Mass., May 9, 1831. He received the degree of A.B. from the University in 1851 and later studied at the Universities of Gottingen, Berlin, and Bonn. He received the degree of Ph.D. from Gottingen and LL.D. from Amherst, Cambridge University, Columbia, Edinburgh, Chicago, and Yale. He was professor of Greek literature in the University from 1860 to 1901, and was an overseer from 1903 to 1909.
