Just getting started in the web of new systems can be a challenge. The new software puts more than eight different tools on her computer desktop. She must memorize almost as many "passwords" to use the system's various programs.
"As a lab administrator, I need to know several of the ADAPT programs," she says. "We use up to four distinctly different computer applications for purchasing and reimbursement instead of one or two."
Plan for the future. Some day, the systems may totally eliminate the need for paperwork, allowing all purchasing to be done online. For example, a user could view an electronic catalog, order test tubes and complete all of the approval, billing and payment without getting up from the computer.
"I presume that it benefits me because the bean-counters can budget more specifically," says Paul B. Cote, a lecturer at the design school who is also assistant director of computer resources. "I certainly wouldn't say that the hassle has outweighed the benefits."
