Many an old Trib hand takes a dim view of the changes. One complaint is that during the Trib's belt-tightening close to 20 reporters have left its city staff alone, a one-third reduction. Some Trib staffers hold Brownie largely responsible. Although he has been in complete command only for a month, he has been running the paper's finances for more than a year, when he returned from Paris after putting the European edition of the Trib handsomely in the black...

Attorney General Herbert Brownell, who announced three weeks ago that the Justice Department intended to file antitrust charges against most of the U.S. publishing and advertising industry (TIME, May 9), last week kept his promise. In the Manhattan U.S. District Court the Department of Justice filed a civil complaint charging the industry with "conspiracy" to 1) fix all advertising agency commissions at 15%, 2) deny credit to "nonrecognized" ad agencies that are not members of the trade associations. Defendants named: American Newspaper Publishers Association (801 member newspapers), Periodical Publishers' Association of America (Crowell-Collier, Hearst, Curtis, McCall), Publishers...

...with considerable interest that I read of Father Robert Henle's complaint regarding "philosophizing scientists" [April 25]. It would appear that he believes (as do so many other theologians) only his church can provide answers to the eternal questions of life and purpose . . . Many men, such as the late Dr. Einstein . . . are perhaps better qualified to speculate about the existence of God and the nature of things than those indoctrinated in authoritarian creeds. A study of history reveals that science has pursued truth more diligently than religion...

Usually the reaction to large prints is the complaint that they suffer from broader and coarser workmanship. Martin has tried to solve this problem technically as well as artistically. Instead of transferring a preliminary drawing to the block, he does a few sketches on paper and then works primarily on the wood. As a result of greater honesty to the medium, he seems to gain in mastery of space and texture, as well as in freedom. Swinging lines and the very alive look of the "Lute Player" are characteristic qualities of his work...

Recognized. The announcement produced immediate results. Shortly after, under questioning from reporters at his press conference in Washington, Attorney General Herbert Brownell revealed that his antitrust division plans to file a complaint, on civil charges, against the A.N.P.A., American Association of Advertising Agencies and several other trade associations. They have been under investigation since last year for fixing commissions on ad rates in interstate commerce. Newspaper and magazine trade associations have violated the Sherman Antitrust Act, charged Brownell, by fixing 15% of the price of an ad as the standard fee for agencies for placing an ad. Agencies must...
