After leaving Ecuador in 1963. Agee was reassigned to Uruguay, a nation that--was though to be "soft on communism" and a potential trouble sport for U.S. policy. In the aftermath of the disastrous CIA-supported Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, the effort to isolate Cuba was at its height. Using the same basic tactics as in Ecuador, Agee worked to infiltrate the Uruguayan Left and the government in order to force a diplomatic break with Cuba. Once again the CIA was successful, as Uruguay imposed economic and political sanctions on Cuba in September...

Small-Brained Beast. The predatory shark was easiest meat of all for editorial cartoonists. They soon drew great whites labeled inflation, Communism and energy crisis gobbling up wages, Portugal and motorcars. There was even a cartoon showing Gloria Steinem swimming down to bite a shark. Columnists too sought political parallels: the Washington Post's George F. Will expressed amazement that in Washington, "where the Congress is regularly on view, people pay to see this movie about a small-brained beast that is all muscle and appetite." Universal swiftly capitalized on all the attention, bringing out a full-page newspaper...

Speaking in Russian while a translator simultaneously rendered his remarks into English, Solzhenitsyn projected the same sense of intense moral fervor that has made him one of the world's major authors. Understandably, he bitterly attacked Communism as an enemy of the human spirit. But Solzhenitsyn went on to criticize American foreign policy toward the Soviet Union. The U.S., he said, should never have cooperated with the Russians in any way, not even in forming the alliance against Hitler during World War II, and he implied that the U.S. should still be fighting Communism in Indochina...
