First work of the new House of Commons last week was to obey a Royal command to elect their Speaker. George V's command was given by proxy in the neighboring House of Lords. Until the Speaker is elected, the Commons cannot sit as the House (with the Mace on the table) but only in committee (with the Mace under the table).
