WASHINGTON: With soldiers from Operation Tailwind in the room as living corroboration, Secretary of Defense William Cohen spoke slowly and clearly: "We have found absolutely no evidence to support CNN-TIME's assertions" that the operation involved the use of deadly sarin nerve gas on American defectors. The statement was hardly surprising -- the Pentagon has denied the substance of the report ever since it originally aired on CNN on June 7 -- but a defensive Cohen acknowledged the difficulty of stuffing the report back in its Pandora...

According to CNN, the prosecutor is no longer satisfied with the imminent testimony of two uniformed Secret Service agents on White House detail who are thought to have knowledge of their protectee?s alleged Oval Office trysts. Starr has subpoenaed the chief of President Clinton's elite plainclothes security detail ?- the one in which men are expected to take a bullet for their boss ?- and seems intent on giving the Secret Service all the moral high ground it needs to drive his own approval ratings right...

CNN reports that Rudolph gave storekeeper George Nordmann a handwritten grocery list, requesting sufficient quantities of batteries, oatmeal, beans and other items to keep him supplied for a year. A few days later Nordmann's truck and up to 75 pounds of food were taken from his home. CNN's sources also allege that Rudolph left $500 as payment; the truck was found abandoned at a campground on Monday...
...respect the forthright way that CNN handled their reinvestigation, and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with them. We have learned a lot from the mistakes made, and we are working out new procedures to avoid them in the future. Like CNN, we retract the story and apologize...
