American politics comes packaged for us every morning--the lesson of the day wrapped in morning headlines. No one is quite certain where the media's assumed political messages come from; they are the old wives' tales of CNN. In all likelihood these rules came from an opinion poll--a Dick Morris poll at that. Yet legitimate or not, CNN pundits, newspaper columnists and fast talkers who speak more quickly than they edit continually repeat certain maxims for Americans...

...Your vote can turn the tide of an election!" screamed the Gore e-mail service, continually alluding to the 1960 election in which John F. Kennedy edged Richard M. Nixon with an average of one vote per precinct nationwide. People must now take the voting privilege more seriously, declared CNN and The Boston Globe...

Mary Matalin may be just as well known as her boss, but that's not a notion the sharp-tongued former co-host of CNN's Crossfire wants to entertain. Drawing attention to oneself is frowned on in Dick Cheney's button-down world, in which the erstwhile TV opinionista is counselor to the Vice President and assistant to the President. The suffering and uncertainty are constant, everyday and unspectacular. While CNN captures the moments when the violence boils over, it cannot capture the daily grind of conflict: emotions of fear, uncertainty, anger and frustration. Every Palestinian is not out in the street, head wrapped in a kafeeyah, throwing stones at Israeli soldiers. But Palestinians do live with constant uncertainty as to whether the Israelis will arbitrarily alter their...

...circumvent the Israeli closure of the West Bank so they might earn enough money to provide their children with food for the first time in several days. I know children who have missed untold amounts of school because of curfews. None of these events make their way onto CNN because they are unspectacular compared to the short bursts of violence. Nonetheless, these events affect Palestinian life just as much as the dramatic scenes that make the news. The Palestinians live in constant fury that their combination of everyday inconvenience and widespread trauma seems to illicit no response from the outside...
