...Salonika and Jaffa and many another exotic port, push a string of fat-bellied, black-hulled, matter-of-fact ships with extravagantly alliterative names (examples: Excalibur, Exochorda, Exeter, Excambion). Most have proud six-foot letters on their hulls - AMERICAN EXPORT LINES. Their fore-and after-kingposts, surrounded by a cluster of loading booms like umbrella ribs, point ambitiously to the sky. For two years, American Export's President William H. Coverdale has also been pointing ambitiously skyward: he wants to start an airline to the Mediterranean and Black Seas...
...past four months physicists of the National Bureau of Standards at Washington have been sending clusters of small sounding balloons to great heights in the upper air. Purpose: cosmic ray research. The balloons carry Geiger-Müller cosmic ray counters, barographs, automatic radios which send signals to a ground station every 15 seconds, recording the altitude (in terms of air pressure) and the intensity of the cosmic bombardment. Last week Drs. L. F. Curtiss and A. V. Astin reported that one cluster of six balloons had reached the remarkable height of 23 miles (about 120,000 ft.). This...
...Sheridan Downey's campaigning topics was old age pensions. The yearning throngs of oldsters who were beginning to cluster around Dr. Francis E. Townsend heard him lecture, by invitation, at their meetings. Mr. Downey liked the Doctor's monthly-spending provision-to speed trade velocity. When EPIC crashed, Sheridan Downey became attorney for the Doctor and his Plan. The Doctor's subsequent flirtations with Father Coughlin, Gerald Smith (inheritor of Huey Long's "Share the Wealth" movement) and Representative William Lemke cooled Attorney Downey. He and the Doctor drifted apart...
Last week, as result of experiments in the little Pittsburgh "pilot mill." J. & L. introduced a new process which it hopes will give the company dominance of the seamless pipe market. Hitherto manganese, the element which gives, steel its pliability, has been apt to cluster instead of spreading evenly through the steel; now J. & L. is feeding manganese into the molten metal in carefully measured and shaped lots. The new process, says Metallurgist Graham, is like using bits of quick-dissolving granulated sugar in coffee rather than lump sugar. The analogy would be more accurate, he adds, if lump sugar...
...campaign of 1934, enormous political hoopla was made over a proposed unemployment census which would have furnished a juicy cluster of local census-taking jobs for each Democratic candidate to dangle before his district workers on election day. In the 1936 campaign, charges of corruption in Relief were part of Alf Landon's ammunition. But as items of political history, these "scandals" compare to the great WPA controversy of 1938, as peanuts to a watermelon...
