Robin is rather special himself. He is a cheerful, buttery fellow who is a hairdresser and, sure enough, a homosexual. He has his own problem: Should he come all the way out of the closet and parade at his favorite gay bar as Tallulah? Or Carol Channing? Or (sigh) Bette Davis? He is a dumpy man trying absurdly and wistfully to turn himself into a dumpy woman. Will thousands sneer...
Bats are so valuable to Carew-and Carew's bat so valuable to the Twins -that a locked closet next to the clubhouse sauna is reserved for his lumber. The heat of the sauna "bakes out the bad wood," as Carew phrases it. He also keeps a supply of bats in his locker stall, safely distant from the communal bin in the tunnel leading to the dugout. Irving Stein provides the best example of this in the current novel. Urged to remember his sons when bequeathing his entire art collection to Elesina, he relents with a few to kens: "Well, suppose I leave them each a painting?...To Lionel the Holbein of Mary Tudor. To Peter the Botticelli To David...
...Afro offices at 77 Dunster will probably preserve the outward stability of the department for the foreseeable future, but that appearance remains a deceptive one, and conditions in Afro may once again wax turbulent if someone should decide to reopen one of those currently airtight boxes in Pandora's closet...
