...performance all the more extraordinary when one realizes that Wadham is given none of the clever lines or emotional speeches that the other characters receive. The only thing Pitt is passionate about is cutting waste--at times he almost sounds like Al Gore in his plea for efficiency. Yet Pitt, for all his faults, is one of the more sympathetic characters in the play. Incessantly goaded about his loss of America and his father's own descent into madness, Pitt retreats further and further into himself, carrying the audience with him. When George III returns to sanity, the corresponding success...
...sense, the Shops by Harvard Yard seems to be a rather clever profit-making move. According to Gifford, HRE deliberately pursued the Profitable switch form large stores to small ones. The big, older stores like The Cambridge Shop had longstanding contracts that tended to favor the storeowner over the landlord. By replacing the old standbys with tiny stores, HRE can increase the amount of rent it receives...
...Lichtenstein, congealed in his cryogenic style. There's none of the engaged imagination, the sense of a transforming mind at work, that one gets in, say, Miro's wild versions of a 17th century Dutch interior, down the road at the Museum of Modern Art. Civilized irony is a grace and an asset, but it doesn't need to be pumped up to the size of the Sistine ceiling. In this later work...
Jayme Koszyn's direction is consistently admirable. Unlike the actresses' accents, the script's rapid shifts in time and space never become disorienting. Clever use of props and dramatic changes in lighting create maximum mood changes in minimal time: The pace of the production could not be slicker. Sound effects are used to particular advantage. Although the only characters physically on stage are the four women themselves, the presences of the key men in their lives are made apparent through associated noises. Great-grandfather Jack is represented by a lawnmower, for example, with an efficacy which led me to wonder...
...expected. Instead of fresh, unadulterated shrimp under a zesty citrus shower complemented by crisp green lettuce (this is how it's usually prepared in Asia,) it was suffocating in a coagulated spicy red paste. Abominable! Speaking of abominations, both the Pears and Prawns and the Pleasing Garlic, despite the clever appellations, should be chucked from the menu...
