...smiles until he read a promotional pamphlet for a projected rejuvenation clinic in Nice, France. The blurb intimated that he owed his latter-day powers to the injection of live cells from embryo lambs and calves. Bull, said Charlie. He kept youthful by himself, and that embryo claptrap was a denigrating lie. French courts agreed, upheld Charlie's suit to force withdrawal of the pamphlets...

...from the students themselves. The quotes they choose are not very helpful. Too often they simply step off the deep end philosophically ("The Catholic at Harvard runs certain risks... Harvard is really all the risks of life itself" or grammatically ("Theologically it reduces to illogism [sic] and even worse claptrap"). Their entertainment value is high--from a Radcliffe sophomore, "I was a member of a minority group for the first time, and I loved it"-- but they provide no real insight into the Catholic mind at Harvard...

...Freedom Party's organ, Swarajya Rajagopalachari assailed India's Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for "this claptrap Goa action. No cartoon can do full justice to the contradictions of our international peace policy arising out of Mr. Nehru's action. India has helped undermine the prestige and power of the U.N. Security Council. India has totally lost the moral power to raise her voice against the use of military power." India, continued Rajagopalachari, had claimed that its action was based on anticolonialist grounds, yet had courted a Soviet veto of the U.N. request for a cease-fire even...

Painting with Bread. What seemed like claptrap was in fact a pioneering concern with light-the same concern that the impressionists were to share almost a generation later. While other artists began even the sketchiest watercolor with a painstaking drawing, Turner worked swiftly and directly with color. He might use a sponge, a knife, a finger or a piece of bread to get the desired effect; he was perfectly willing to let form be nearly drowned in movement. Few men have ever captured so luminously the restless wave, the fleeting cloud, a gathering mist or a fading twilight...
