...people, but over the years we have singled out rising figures in many fields early in their careers and sometimes before others -or even they themselves-were aware of what was happening. Nothing is more satisfying in the professional life of a journalist. Among the innumerable examples we could cite are Willkie, Stevenson, Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson in U.S. politics; Eisenhower, Gruenther and Radford in the military sphere; Nasser, Nkrumah and Castro (whom we recognized as a Communist when he was still being widely hailed as a reforming liberal) among foreign leaders; Saarinen, De Kooning, Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Albert Finney...
Also annoying is Sorensen's sparse use of examples--although he does cite the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 seventeen times. (He does not mention the Bay of Pigs.) Despite his personal intimacy with many decisions, Sorensen repeatedly speaks in the generic ("the most formidable debater is not necessarily the most informed; the reticent may sometimes be the wisest,") instead of the specific rendering insights so vage as to be meaningless...

...feeling about SANE are particularly strong: "What's the use of advising parents about ordinary diseases when the overwhelming danger is annihilation, fallout and the damage caused by the cold war psychology?" He went on to cite clinical studies of this damage in children. It is a characteristic of Dr. Spock that he states his ideas directly and simply, but is always able to back them up. ...Size of Monument: It would be unfitting to erect a monument to God that is smaller than monuments already existing in Washington in recognition of mortals. Those honoring Lincoln and Washington, to cite two widely known examples, are rather large. A memorial grander than these could run into money...
