Tart-tongued South Carolina Democrat Fritz Hollings, one of Domenici's predecessors as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, decried all talk of surpluses as "a circus act if I've ever seen one." ...figured I'd have better luck at the nearby organic grocery store. Fresh Fields is part of Whole Foods, which also runs Bread & Circus. It had most of what I needed, including an oh-so-pure turkey that had dined exclusively on genetically correct feed. But at $1.79 per lb., it wasn't cheap. And then I had to get organic chicken broth--"Nurse Hathaway, baster! Stat!"--not to mention all the organic veggies. Bottomline: it would cost an extra $30 to make Ralph Nader happy...
Only a few songs on To the Teeth fall short of Ani-esque brilliance. "Freakshow" begins its study of the circus with grinding guitars and grating vocals, yet concludes that the Big Top is essentially all about "love and compliance." There seems to be some sort of grand metaphor here, but DiFranco never clues us in. It's easy to skip over a song that squeals "And some of the clowns are happy/And some of the clowns are sad." Whatever you say, Ani. Many listeners may be confused and unsettled by the juxtaposition of extended clown analogies with aching accusations...
...this false god of youth just as wayward, ancient Hebrews once knelt at the hooves of a golden calf. But perhaps there's a lesson there as well. Once the world's darling, that golden calf later found herself a tarnished cow, reduced to flashing her sagging udders at circus sideshows.
