Into the Grand Jury Room in Federal Court in Manhattan last week a puffing G-man lugged a large chart, showing the operations of the spy net which G-men and U. S. Attorney Lamar Hardy have been trying to net since February (TIME, May 30). The hunt began when an American Army deserter of Austrian parentage, brush-headed Guenther Gustave Rumrich, was arrested in a clumsy attempt to steal passport blanks. He promptly implicated several German-Americans in attempts to steal Army aircraft designs and military secrets. Five days after looking at the chart, the Grand Jury returned indictments...

Author Adamic's new name for the U. S. is a socio-economic "Sargasso Sea." But if Author Adamic considers himself afloat in a socio-economic chaos, he also claims to have a navigation chart that explains it. How he discovered this chart is a long story, requiring 44 pages to tell. The story, told in Dynamite and here expanded, is that of the McNamara case and the Syndicalist dynamiting of the Los Angeles Times Building in 1910. ...century scientists have been polarizing light with small natural crystals. Lately a synthetic polarizing material called Polaroid has been developed which can be fabricated into large sheets. In American Optical Co.'s gadget, light from an illuminated test chart first passes through a disk of Polaroid. The person being tested looks through a pair of polarizing lenses, one vertical, one horizontal. By rotating the first disk, the examiner can cut out the vision of either eye at will, so that the subject does not know with which eye he is seeing. It is thus impossible...
