...shameful that Bishop Richard Williamson’s historical errors have become the excuse for others to distort the historical record, ignore basic facts of canon law, and libel the Pope as they go. The true story is straightforward. On July 1, 1988, the Vatican published a decree stating that the four new bishops of the Society of St. Pius X had incurred an automatic excommunication for being consecrated by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre against the will of Pope John Paul II. In response to their numerous requests for the removal of their excommunication, Pope Benedict XVI issued a formal retraction...

...views expressed by Bishop Richard Williamson are disgusting. Yet they are simply not, under any possible reading of canon law, the point on which communion with the Catholic Church is decided. The Catholic Church states that communion requires belief in Catholic doctrine, association with one’s fellow Catholics, and submission to the Roman Pontiff...

...anymore. Today TV broadcasts are just starting points, raw material to be curated in a collective online canon. During the election, I was immersed in political news and comedy, but I saw only a fraction of this material--interviews, skits, Joe the Plumber encounters--on a television. I saw bits embedded on blogs and on YouTube. I saw them straight up, or edited and surrounded by comments. ...Judge Rollins’ conduct is especially inexcusable given the local statutes in question. Canon 3, Section B5 of the Georgia Code of Judicial Conduct prohibits judges from being religiously biased, and a Georgia’s Council of Municipal Court Judges brochure mandates that even hats should not be taken off if worn for religious purposes. As Marc D. Stern wrote on behalf of the American Jewish Congress about this incident, “I have appeared at counsel’s table in the U.S. Supreme Court several times wearing a religious head-covering?...

...Even when Wyeth is admitted into the canon, he's held a bit at arm's length. The Museum of Modern Art in New York City owns his most famous canvas, Christina's World, which it acquired in 1948, soon after it was painted, for just $1,800. But while the picture is always on display at MoMA, it's consigned to what you might call an anteroom on the margins of the more respectably modern galleries, a salon des refuses that it shares with Edward Hopper's House by the Railroad. Seeing Christina splayed across her field of grass...
