...adopting such a narrow and pessimistic stance toward Harvard institutions, not only has Oppenheim been inaccurate, but he has also painted a picture of Harvard for himself that he cannot enjoy. I have been a member of organizations he has criticized as well as service organizations which he seems to single out as the only worthy pursuits. He has consistently judged organizations by their weakest link and the Harvard community by one girl in a crpe shop (which he believes is indicative of a greater personality). I do not mean to defend any of the disturbing examples Oppenheim cited...

...Democrats believe that you cannot be a majority party as long as you're anti-trade," says TIME Washington correspondent Jay Branegan. "People like free trade. But most of the party's members still need labor's support to get reelected." Republican leaders, meanwhile, have fulfilled one of their party's more popular and lucrative destinies - as the party of trade and business - and looked smart for knowing when to get along with the chief executive. We cannot really have an adequate understanding of the future without some view about how well the lives of the poor can be expected to go. Is there, then, hope for the poor? To answer this question, we need an understanding of who should count as poor. Some types of poverty are easy enough to identify. There is no way of escaping immediate diagnosis when faced with what King Lear called "loop'd and window'd raggedness...
