...task of near impossible complexity. What kind of space can do justice, say, to the plunks and skittering knock-knocks in Lou Harrison's Concerto in Slendro and also to the sustained, exalted moan of Mahler's Fifth Symphony? Can the huff and puff of the Carmina Burana sound any good in the same space where soprano Dawn Upshaw unfolds that lucid, liquid C? The curving interior of the Disney Hall was developed by Gehry with Yasuhisa Toyota, a partner in the Tokyo firm Nagata Acoustics...
...crossbreeds the time-tested language of ballet with the high energy and cool irony of pop culture. The results, though sometimes too glibly "accessible," are more often bracingly individual. This season, for example, has seen company premieres of Fluctuating Hemlines, inspired by Camille Paglia's iconoclastic Sexual Personae; Carmina Burana, an unabashedly sexy dance pageant accompanied by Carl Orff's thunderous choral settings of medieval poems about love and lust; and Juanita y Alicia, a "family album" set to Buena Vista Social Club-type music performed live by Sin Miedo, a Washington-based Latino group...
This production includes some new and inventive scenes not found in the script--pantomimes set to Carmina Burana that provide some melodrama and historical background, not to mention a great way to draw us in to this historical scandal. Drama permeates the whole show, and the intimidating music and effective lighting help the actors excel in this production...
What to look for: Definitely director Joe Gfaller's decision to score the play to Carl Orff's lush Carmina Burana. Look out too for the inventiveness of new scenes added to give more depth to Henry VIII's court and life. And definitely keep your eye out for the full Tudor costumes and the large and opulent sets, all in the best style of what we might expect...
...make light of "things that a lot of people expect to be intimidated by and not to like," Abrahams said. This category includes everything from science to opera. Besides a number of science demonstrations, last night's ceremony included a four-act opera that mixed tunes from Carmina Burana and other operas into a story that examined the issues of cloning humans and sheep...
