...like the friendly ambience of bush-league ball. In many of the cozy parks, which often seat no more than 5,000, customers can sit in the top row of the grandstand and still catch snippets of conversations among ballplayers in the batting cage below. Trotting down to the bullpen wall for an autograph is easy. And to the delight of baseball purists, Astroturf has not made it to many minor-league parks...
Granted, the pitching staff has fallen on tough times with the injuries to Bruce Hurst and Jeff Sellars. Nevertheless, Roger Clemens remains the best pitcher in the game, period. Lee Smith and Wes Gardner have provided some order to the chaos that last year reigned in the Red Sox bullpen. The bullpen, led by John Franco (32 saves), is one of the best in the league. A possible Mario Soto comeback just might do it for the Reds. Last year, Soto finished the season at 3-2. Eric Davis and the rest of the Reds offense will score the runs. In 108 games, outfielder Kal Daniels hit 26 HR and batted .334. Best player: Davis...
