Just when parents thought toy-buying season was safely behind them, manufacturers began unveiling their lineup for next Christmas. At the annual Toy Fair in New York City, it's hard to find anything without an imbedded microchip. Mattel's X3 Microscope ($100) comes with a built-in digital camera and hooks up to a PC, so kids can view magnified objects through the scope's lens, then save the images on the computer. Then, after patient cultivation to bring out the inserted trait, a prodigy is born. The transformed crop may be corn or cotton with a built-in insecticide, tomatoes that retain their fresh-picked texture on the shelf, or wheat with extra gluten, making for lighter, bouncier bread. The new crop of doctors has been so busy re-enacting the Creation in the past few years that Americans, at least, no longer pay much notice...

Another thing I want is a DVD player. I've been "testing" the Panasonic A310 ($599), a splendid machine with built-in Dolby audio, and I've been dragging my feet in returning it. DVD is to videotape what CDs were to records. If you haven't seen it, you'll be surprised by the clarity of the picture. I only wish I had DVD on my laptop...
