...Builder Frank Crowe's 19th dam is the world's second biggest concrete structure (biggest: Grand Coulee Dam). Shasta is the highest overflow-type dam in the world (602 ft.). It is also California's tallest structure. When Shasta's reservoir fills (probably in 1946), water pouring over the center spillway will fall three times as far as Niagara. For California, Shasta Dam will...
Stockholders of Brewster Aeronautical Corp. met last week to go through a wearisomely familiar routine: elect a new management, its seventh in three years. Ship builder Henry J. Kaiser, his job done (to get Brewster finally into production), was leaving. He gave out the cheerful news that Brewster, after two years of losses, was finally making money. But he warned that this might not last, that the Navy might end its contract for Corsair fighters, the only contract Brewster held...
Plan No. 1. Sir Godfrey is a surgeon and still, at 60, one of Africa's sure-handed best. Porter Co., in Pittsburgh's slummy Lawrenceville section, he found it. Once a No. 1 builder of industrial locomotives, Porter Co. was down to 40 workers...
Derived from pine-tree sap, the powder is a cheap (less than $5,000 per mile of 40-ft. road), quick road-builder. It works something like sizing in coated paper; a mixture of about 1% of Stabinol in ordinary soil prevents water from penetrating in sufficient quantity to soften it. A resin-stabilized road stays so dry that even when it is covered with a layer of water a truck driven over it throws up a trail of dust. Stabinol does not waterproof sand (because sand lacks a binder to make it solid) and it does not work...
