...Palestinian "security" forces have, ironically, contributed to a most insecure situation. An arms build-up of this magnitude in such a volatile region of the world is a frightening portent. In countries which are still battling to put a lid on the hazards posed by unconventional warfare, there is hardly a need for thousands of extra automatic weapons, least of all in unpredictable, unaccountable and untrustworthy hands. The new cache of arms also acts as a continual threat, politically if not militarily, to Israel's position of strength and stability in a region with no other truly democratic states...

...short as it is, can seem very long. Towards the end, as the techniques that were once startling--head-banging, repetition, shouting--became familiar, I found myself longing for something genuinely risky--a violent gesture, or a vulnerable one, anything that would seem like a payoff to all the build-up. Hyman is forward-looking, and has set the College's weakling student government on a path of meaningful convalescence. There has been a notable lack of scandal and bombast--in its stead, Hyman's administration has been characterized by a low-key, steady build-up of student confidence in and respect for what had been Harvard's most buffoonish comedy of ego and intrigue. Old memories--of offices being broken into, funds illegally transferred and blackmail documents melodramatically exposed at panel discussions--are starting to fade into the dim background buzz of history...

...were the coming of the Messiah. The response to his productions of The America Play and The Accident, both on the A.R.T. New Stage, was so positive one would think he was paying people to say nice things about him (he wasn't). So, with that kind of build-up, it's a shame that his first production on the Loeb Mainstage isn't perfect...
