...Harvard Administration should make them feel better. No doubt Harvard as an institution, which has traditionally prided itself on "training the country's leaders," bears considerable responsibility for White bourgeois Americans feeling superior to others, "normal," as Klitgaard preliminarily wrote. It therefore bears considerable responsibility also for humiliating Black, Brown, Yellow, Red, and working-class Americans. And no doubt the current Harvard Administration could make students who now feel racial, sexual, and class humiliation here feel somewhat better. But you ignore another obvious problem. Evidently what makes students feel most deeply humiliated here is the way students who feel superior...
Short of urging that students improve what you call the Real World, let me propose another campaign for you to undertake to make many students who now feel bad here feel better. Reduce the number of White students, quadruple or quintuple the number of Black, Brown, Yellow, and Red students, and make sure that many students of all colors come from working-class families. That way White bourgeois students would lose their monopoly of Harvard's main student institutions, many more students would live with more dignity in one little College world (not yet the Real World), and fewer would...
...might have been the sound of a four-way tie for third place. After the great start, the upsets of Army and Brown, and the comeback over Penn, Harvard's final resting place does not look especially noteworthy. But in all the furor about the potential championship--the "if Yale loses and Brown and Dartmouth tie and we win our last two" speculation endemic in the Houses this fall--it's easy to lose sight of the distance this Harvard football team travelled...
...quarterback returned to lead a 17-16 triumph over Brown, but he wasn't the same ball-player. His intelligent leadership, which took Harvard back from a two-touchdown deficit at Penn, only helped mask the weaknesses (such as ten interceptions in the last three games) that became so apparent in the 14-0 humiliation against Yale. With a bad knee, the quarterback who ran 67 yards for a touchdown at Army couldn't run anymore. Nor did he throw well on that dark Saturday; thus Harvard--and its quarterback--ended the season with a thud...
...dozen from the U.S. Secret Service, half a dozen from Israel's Shin Bet and another half a dozen from Cartier, which is showing off the diamond as big as the Ritz. Shortly before 7, Hartman comes downstairs, dressed in typically nondescript gray tweed jacket, dark trousers and brown loafers; he does not fancy himself a clotheshorse. He is told that Steve Bell, Good Morning's Washington-based newscaster, wants to talk with him, and Hartman takes the call on the set. Bell tells him that Israeli soldiers have shot and wounded eleven Arab students in the West...
