Townsend of Columbia and Thacher of Harvard showed the most proficiency with the foils, and their bout was the best of the evening. The Harvard man had apparently saved himself for this bout. Both were wary and cool, Thacher appearing fresher than the Columbia representative. Thacher's thrusts were well calculated and delivered, while Townsend's defence and position were excellent.
