Despite its oil wealth, Mexico remains a country of horrendous economic contrasts, now made worse by oil-boom inflation and the rising expectations of its middle and working classes. The bottom 20% of the Mexican population is worse off, in real economic terms, than it was in 1977. Approximately 50% of the population is undernourished, according to one study.
